The Hermit - Russian Cossack

F
rom an upcoming deck I am making based on WWII. The working title of the deck is 'The Tarot of WWII: In Memory of Bravery and Reconciliation'.

This is a seemingly strange subject for Tarot imagery, that being World War II. I say 'seemingly' because for thousands of years the implications of Krishna speaking the Bhagavad-gita to his friend Arjuna on the Battlefield of Kurukshetra has been a template for how one might live, view and navigate life.

The individual personalities of the Major Arcana have been matched to personality analogs of WWII (the archetypes of the cards, and the modern equivalent). What they were in real life, so they are represented here, with the allies on the more pleasing cards and the axis... not so much. (I can’t take credit for that perspective, it’s life and history that made this viewpoint come alive in the making of this deck because that is the truth of the events as they unfolded.) Someone with knowledge of Tarot and WWII would be able to look at the images and immediately get a correlation. Although for the casual observer, some of the imagery will still stir something in the right direction.

This deck is not intended to glorify the war, it is instead capturing the key figures and events responsible for great good and evil, for situations and decisions, and applying them to the archetypes of the cards to invoke similar meanings. And reflect that life has a good, a bad and a gray because from the beginning of time the world has been beautiful and horrible, full of the truly heroic and truly horrific. This was also a time in which all that was good in the world stood up and drew a line and proclaimed "NO MORE!" That is also reflected in this project. There is great good and great evil in the world around us and inside us. And more times than not, this is reflected in readings.

This deck is an attempt to hold a contemporary mirror to life, using one of our greatest modern conflicts as a poignant metaphysical exercise.

And if a new generation learns anything from this project, and this time in history, of what to avoid and what to embrace from it, I am fine with that.

“I do admit that the idea of this deck at first seems shocking and completely 'un-tarot'. However, I think the deck leads to some great ways of seeing the deck in real-world situations. Using great conflicts such as wars to understand and explain spiritual matters has been around since the Bhagavad Gita. What good is tarot if it can't help us to understand the world around us.”

“This Tarot is a reminder of no matter what happens we can and do get through life the best way we can.  And it also is giving us another perspective on helping ourselves and others, no matter what horrors or difficulties we have in our lives we can pull through, strong and resilient.”
